A playscape is a whole room designed for play. This one began with a brief for two children: as many activities as could fit, with structures for climbing, jumping, swinging and sliding, and walls used imaginatively.
We arrived at a soft, sinuous form along the edge of the room that expands and contracts to create different experiences while leaving the middle open for free play. The loop starts with a foam form leading to an inclined rock climb, descends into a wooden slide toward monkey bars, and reaches a ball pit edged with a balance beam. A rope climb leads to the top of the jungle gym, the highest point in the room, with grid walls to climb down and a cave beneath.
The whole playscape is built from organic materials: a solid hemlock and plywood frame with rope and fabric in the climbing structure, swing and seats, and walls painted with chalkboard paint for drawing on.
